Two years ago when we just had Cora (and she had just turned one), we were home “alone” for Thanksgiving and I felt pressure to make a feast. I made a turkey breast, mashed potatoes, pie(s), green beans, cranberry sauce, and and and – you get the picture, yes?
This year we are home alone again on Thanksgiving, but it doesn’t feel the same. I feel relaxed. We are doing the traditional Thanksgiving meal on Sunday with my side of the family. The husband’s side is doing lasagna tomorrow. And I wanted to start our own tradition for just us, just the immediate four of us that benefit so much from the together time we have here. So I’m making a roast in the crock pot today (the most delicious and easy dinner ever). And some cheese muffins I got from some blog somewhere (will have to try to find that later). And maybe another spaghetti squash (because it is just that good). And drinking a bit of dark red wine.
We’re spending the day painting, and doing laundry, and going for walks, and sitting around in our jammies eating pancakes for breakfast and far too much coffee. And we are laughing and having a “party dance” and snuggling and talking and taking it all in. Because next year they will be a year older and this moment will be lost forever to be filled with new moments. ‘Savor them’ is the thought running through my head these days. They are getting big and before I realize it this will all be ancient history.
For some reason I don’t feel so alone this year. I feel thankful. I feel filled up and out and I think part of it is from all of the other lives I see in blogland daily. It’s okay to just be us and actually it’s not “just” us but fully us. We are this family and we are what counts and we are building memories. One day at a time.
I’m going to copy the idea on Coveiter and make an ABC of gratitude list:
A : angels
B : blogging
C : cora
D : della
E : eagerness
F : fridays
G : green tea
H : home

Happy Thanksgiving! I made so much food, but in looking at the pictures, it doesn’t look like I cooked a thing!
I think the cheese muffins are from The Pioneer Woman cooks–her dairy contest. Someone else in blogland made them (Angry Chicken, maybe?) and raved about them recently on her blog. I totally know who you are talking about but can’t remember, either!
